Josef Škvorecký (1924-2012) was a Czech-Canadian writer and publisher, born in Náchod, Czechoslovakia. During WWII he was a slave labourer in a German aircraft factory; he later studied philosophy at Charles University, wrote banned novels like The Cowards, and fled to Canada after the 1968 Soviet invasion, where he founded 68 Publishers with his wife Zdena Salivarová and taught at the University of Toronto.
