About “The Cowards”

The Cowards is a Czech novel by Josef Škvorecký. Written between 1948 and 1949 but published in 1958, it is set during the final week of the Second World War in Europe. The story is told from the perspective of a young Czech man, Danny Smiřický, who is near the end of his teens. It takes place in a fictional town called Kostelec in northeast Bohemia, near the border with German Middle Silesia. The narrative covers the period from 4 to 11 May 1945.
