Noel Joseph Terence Montgomery Needham (1900–1995) was a British biochemist, historian of science, and sinologist, known for his research and writing on the history of Chinese science and technology. He initiated the multivolume Science and Civilisation in China and drew attention to what became known as the Needham Question: why China had ceded its early leadership in science and technology to Western countries.
