Kingsley Amis, author of Lucky Jim, was born in south London in 1922 and died in 1995. His first literary interest was poetry: he was writing verse at age eleven, edited Oxford Poetry 1949 at university, and published two poetry collections, A Frame of Mind and A Case of Samples. He worked as a university lecturer in English and wrote articles and reviews for British newspapers and magazines.
