Konstantine Gamsakhurdia was a Georgian writer and public figure who was educated and first published in Germany. He married Western European influences to purely Georgian themes, producing works such as The Right Hand of the Grand Master and David the Builder. Hostile to Soviet rule, he survived the Stalin-era repressions despite being exiled to a White Sea island and experiencing several arrests. His writings are noted for psychological depth and a subtlety he infused into Georgian diction, imitating an archaic style to create a sense of classicism.
