L. E. (Leland Exton) Modesitt, Jr. is an American writer known for his contributions to the science fiction and fantasy genres. He is most recognized for the fantasy series The Saga of Recluce. Modesitt earned his degree from Williams College in Massachusetts. He spent two decades living in Washington, D.C., before moving to New Hampshire in 1989, where he met his wife. The couple later relocated to Cedar City, Utah, in 1993.
