Leslie Poles Hartley was born in Cambridgeshire, England, to a father who managed a factory and held strong religious views. He attended Harrow and later Oxford University, where he studied before serving in the army during the First World War, leaving due to ill-health. After returning to Oxford and completing his studies, he began writing seriously and spent much of the rest of his life in Italy. He became known for his short stories and novels, particularly the trilogy about Eustace and Hilda, which explore the challenges of growing up and the society of the time.
