Narrated as a memoir, this novel tells the story of one summer at the turn of the century when the narrator was a young boy. The boy spends the summer as a guest at a country estate where he befriends a local farmer and becomes an unwitting messenger carrying letters between the farmer and the daughter of his host, whom he has a crush on.
