Lester del Rey (born Leonard Knapp) was an American science fiction author from Minnesota, born to poor sharecroppers, who began publishing pulp fiction in the late 1930s. He edited several science fiction magazines and later founded the Del Rey Books imprint at Ballantine with his wife Judy-Lynn del Rey in 1977.
