The book centers on a nuclear accident at the great atomic plant in Kimberly, where a failure in converter Number four causes a runaway fusion reaction due to an unstable isotope. The supervisor of the technical team, Jorgenson, survives the accident but is trapped inside the reactor and is the only person who knows how to stop the disaster, leading to a desperate effort to locate and save him before the situation destroys the possibility of controlled nuclear power.
