Lynd Kendall Ward (1905–1985) was an American artist and novelist known for his wordless novels created through wood engraving, as well as his illustrations for books intended for both children and adults. His wordless novels influenced the evolution of the graphic novel. In addition to wood engraving, Ward worked in watercolor, oil, brush and ink, lithography, and mezzotint. He was the son of Harry F. Ward, a Methodist minister and political organizer. Ward's most well-known works include Gods' Man and The Biggest Bear, which won the Caldecott Medal.
