Machiko Hasegawa

Machiko Hasegawa was a Japanese manga artist and one of the first female manga artists. She created the comic strip Sazae-san, which began in 1946 and achieved national circulation through the Asahi Shimbun in 1949. The comic ran daily until her retirement in February 1974, and her works were published in digest comics in Japan. By the mid-1990s, her estate had sold over 60 million copies in Japan.
