Maeve Binchy was born in Dalkey, County Dublin, Ireland, the eldest of four children. She studied at University College Dublin and worked as a teacher before transitioning to journalism after her letters home were published in a newspaper. She married Gordon Snell, also a published writer, and achieved literary success with the publication of her first novel, Light a Penny Candle. Her works often explore relationship issues and are frequently set in Ireland, sometimes in the past.
