When a new highway threatens to bypass the town of Rossmore and cut through Whitethorn Woods, residents debate whether the town will benefit or suffer. Father Flynn is concerned about the fate of St. Ann's Well, located at the edge of the woods and scheduled for destruction, a site where people have long come to share their dreams, fears, and prayers, with some viewing it as spiritually powerful and others seeing it as a place of superstition.
