Marguerite Duras, born Marguerite Donnadieu on April 4, 1914, in Gia Định, near Saigon, then part of French Indochina, was a French writer, playwright, screenwriter, and director. She died on March 3, 1996, in Paris. Duras is recognized as a major figure in the literature of the second half of the 20th century. Her work is noted for its diversity and modernity, as it revitalized the novel and challenged theatrical and cinematic conventions.
