Marguerite Duras, born Marguerite Donnadieu on April 4, 1914, in Gia Định, near Saigon, then part of French Indochina, was a French writer, playwright, screenwriter, and director. She died on March 3, 1996, in Paris. Duras is recognized as a major figure in the literature of the second half of the 20th century.
