About “La Douleur”

La Douleur is a 1985 collection of six texts by Marguerite Duras. Two of the texts, L'ortie brisée and Aurélia Paris, are fictional. The other four are based on Duras's real experiences. In La Douleur, her husband is referred to as Robert L., and others retain the names of resistants. Monsieur X. dit ici Pierre Rabier describes her connection to the man who arrested her husband. Albert des Capitales and Ter le milicien feature Duras as Thérèse, recounting the aftermath of Paris's liberation. In Albert des Capitales, Thérèse forces a confession from a man who sold Jews to the Gestapo. Her colleagues disapprove, and instead of an execution, she lets the man leave.
