Where to start with Mark Twain

Begin with The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, published in 1876, as it is the first book in the Tom Sawyer series and offers a foundational entry into Mark Twain’s fictional world. Proceed in publication order through the series: Tom Sawyer's Conspiracy, Tom Sawyer, Detective, Tom Sawyer Abroad, Tom Sawyer, Prince and Pauper, and Tom Sawyer, the Conspirator. These works follow Tom’s adventures and evolving character across different settings and situations. For standalone works, consider starting with Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, published in 1884, as it is a central text in Twain’s canon and directly continues Tom’s story in tone and setting. The other standalone titles, such as Life on the Mississippi and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, are also published in chronological order and reflect key phases of Twain’s writing career.
