Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc (11 December 1864 – 6 November 1941) was a French novelist and writer of short stories, best known for creating the fictional gentleman thief and detective Arsène Lupin. The first Lupin story appeared in 1905 in the magazine Je sais tout, and by 1907 Leblanc had begun writing full-length Lupin novels. He continued to write Lupin tales into the 1930s, despite attempts to create other characters, which he later merged with Lupin. Leblanc also wrote two science fiction novels: Les Trois Yeux (1919) and Le Formidable Évènement (1920). He was awarded the Légion d'Honneur for his contributions to literature. Leblanc died in Perpignan in 1941 and was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery. His sister, Georgette Leblanc, was also involved in the literary world.
