Michael Andreas Helmuth Ende (12 November 1929 – 28 August 1995) was a German writer known for his works in fantasy and children's fiction. He is most recognized for Die unendliche Geschichte (The Neverending Story), as well as Momo and Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer (Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver). His books achieved international success and were adapted into films, television, and theater. Ende's works have been translated into more than 40 languages and sold over 30 million copies. He was one of the most successful German authors of the 20th century, particularly for his children's fiction, though he also wrote for adult audiences. His writing often combined elements of reality and fantasy.
