Dhanpat Rai Shrivastava (July 31, 1880 - October 8, 1936), better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand, was an Indian writer famous for his modern Hindi-Urdu literature. He began writing under the pen name "Nawab Rai" before switching to "Premchand," with "Munshi" an honorary prefix. A novelist, story writer, and dramatist, he has been called the "Upanyas Samrat" ("Emperor among Novelists").
