About “Godāna”
Premchand is the most famous Hindi novelist, and Godaan is his most celebrated novel. The story follows Hori, a poor farmer in a north Indian village, and his family's struggle for survival and self-respect. Hori's greatest desire is to own a cow, which symbolizes wealth and well-being for peasants. Like many Hindus of his time, he believes giving a cow to a Brahman before death will bring him salvation. Godaan captures economic and social conflict in a village setting. It serves as an engaging introduction to India before Independence, blending village ethnography, a moving human story, and insights into colonial history. The novel was out of print for many years but is now recognized as a classic through its translation.
