Naguib Mahfouz was an Egyptian writer who won the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy recognized him for creating an Egyptian narrative art that applies to all mankind, describing his works as rich in nuance and ranging from clear-sightedly realistic to evocatively ambiguous. He was born in 1911 and died in 2006.
