Patricia Daniels Cornwell is an American crime fiction author born in 1956, best known for creating forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta, the protagonist of one of the longest-running and most successful mystery series in the genre. Her debut novel Postmortem (1990) broke new ground by bringing forensic science to the forefront of crime fiction, drawing on her experience working at a medical examiner's office. She has sold tens of millions of books worldwide and is widely credited with popularizing the forensic thriller as a literary form.
