Pedro Antonio Joaquín Melitón de Alarcón y Ariza was a Spanish novelist born in Guadix, Granada, on March 10, 1833, and died in Madrid on July 19, 1891. He was part of the realist movement and is recognized as one of the key figures in ending the romantic prose tradition. His work contributed significantly to the shift in Spanish literature toward realism.
