Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and was declared illegitimate following her mother Anne Boleyn's execution. Elizabeth established her own religion in England, declaring herself its head, and enforced attendance at her religious services through fines, while imposing severe penalties, including death, for harboring Catholic priests or for being an overseas-ordained priest.
