Richard H. Tawney was an English economist and academic, born in Calcutta, India, in 1880. He was educated at Rugby and Balliol College, Oxford, and later held a Chair of Economic History at the London School of Economics. He served as president of the Workers Educational Association for sixteen years and was a member of the British Labour Party since 1906, participating in various public bodies including the Coal Commission and the University Grants Committee. His most influential works include Religion and the Rise of Capitalism, The Acquisitive Society, and Equality, which established his international reputation.
