The acquisitive society, as described by R. H. Tawney, is an economic system in which all economic activity is driven by the pursuit of profit, treating wealth as an end in itself rather than a means to a social purpose. In contrast, a functional society is one in which businesses are managed by professionals whose primary concerns are service, efficiency, and the well-being of workers, rather than the maximization of profit for distant owners.
