Robert Jordan was an American fantasy author born James Oliver Rigney Jr. in Charleston, South Carolina, who served two tours in Vietnam before turning to writing full time. He is best known for creating The Wheel of Time, an epic fourteen-volume fantasy series begun in 1990 that sold over 90 million copies worldwide.
