Rolf Hochhuth (1931–2020) was a German author and playwright, best known for his 1963 drama The Deputy (Der Stellvertreter), which questioned Pope Pius XII's response to the Nazi extermination of the Jews. He remained a controversial figure for his plays and public statements, including his 2005 defense of British Holocaust denier David Irving.
