About “The Deputy”
The Deputy, also known as The Representative, is a 1963 play written by Rolf Hochhuth. It portrays Pope Pius XII as failing to act or speak against the Holocaust, leading to controversy. The play has been translated into more than twenty languages. Some critics have challenged its historical accuracy, with the Encyclopædia Britannica calling its depiction of the pope "unhistorical" and lacking credible support. However, it was later discovered that Pope Pius XII may have known about concentration camps, including Dachau, which held priests. The play faced criticism and accusations, including claims that Hochhuth was misled by a Soviet disinformation campaign, later confirmed by declassified documents.
