Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu, known as Sheridan Le Fanu, was an Irish writer who lived from 28 August 1814, to 7 February 1873. He was recognized as a leading ghost story writer of the nineteenth century and played a significant role in the development of the Gothic and horror fiction genres during the Victorian era. His works include mystery novels and Gothic tales, with three of his most famous works being Uncle Silas, Carmilla, and The House by the Churchyard. The British writer M. R. James praised him as "absolutely in the first rank as a writer of ghost stories."
