Dōsei was a Buddhist monk of the Tang dynasty. His exact birth year is unknown, but he died in 683. He was known by the style Gen'un and belonged to the Han family. He was born in the southern part of Luoyang County, Henan. His ancestors worked in official capacities in Jingzhao. During the early Tang dynasty, Buddhist teachings founded by figures such as Zhiyi, Jizang, and Dushun had become widespread. Dōsei expressed concern over the lack of proper understanding of Buddhist terminology, as many temples did not have a complete set of the three baskets (Tripitaka) and the scriptures were difficult to access. To address this, he conducted extensive research on the three baskets, carefully citing and explaining the sutras, vinaya, and shastras. He compiled this work into a book titled Hōen Shūrin, which contributed to the foundation of Buddhist scholarly research.
