Su is a Chinese novelist known for his controversial writing style and is considered one of the pioneers of modern Chinese literature. He has authored seven full-length novels and over 200 short stories, with several of his works translated into English, German, Italian, and French. His most famous novel, Wives and Concubines in the West, was published in 1990 and later adapted into the film Raise the Red Lantern by director Zhang Yimou. The novel was also republished under the title of the film. His other works available in English include Rice, My Life as Emperor, Binu and the Great Wall (translated by Howard Goldblatt), and Madwoman on the Bridge and Other Stories. In 2009, Su received the Man Asian Literary Prize for The Boat to Redemption, making him the second Chinese writer to win the award.
