This volume collects three novellas by Chinese writer Su Tong. The title work, Raise the Red Lantern, was the basis for the acclaimed film of the same name and tells of four concubines competing for their master's attention in a 1930s rural clan house. Nineteen Thirty-Four Escapes follows a family's history in a disastrous year, and Opium Family portrays a wealthy family's ruin through greed, lust, and violence.
