Banren-sha Nyūkan, also known as Ryōjō, was a scholar-monk of the Pure Land sect during the early Edo period. He was born in Iwaki, Mutsu Province, and pursued the path of Buddhism from an early age. Driven by a desire to seek unknown Buddhist teachings, he planned to travel to Ming China and stayed in the Ryukyu Kingdom while searching for a ship to go to China. During his stay, he worked to spread the Pure Land sect in Ryukyu. After failing to find a ship to China and returning home, he contributed to the establishment and revival of many Pure Land temples, including Hōrō-ji in Sanjō, Kyoto.
