Usuard was a monk of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. He is known for composing the Martyrology of Usuard, a compilation of saints' lives that synthesized elements from earlier martyrologies and remained influential throughout the Middle Ages. The work was apparently written shortly before his death in 875. He was born in 800 and died in 877.
