About “Martyrology of Usuard”
The Martyrology of Usuard is a 9th-century work composed by Usuard, a monk from the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It was created at the request of Charles the Bald and likely completed shortly before Usuard's death in 875. The text draws from earlier martyrologies, including the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, the work of Ado of Vienne, and an expanded version of Bede's martyrology attributed to Florus of Lyon. It includes the lives of 1,100 saints and was widely used throughout the Middle Ages. It influenced the later Roman Martyrology and remained the most prominent martyrology of its time.
