Vladimir Vladimirovich Nabokov was a Russian-American novelist, short story writer, and lepidopterist. He was born on 23 April 1899 and died on 2 July 1977. Nabokov wrote his first nine novels in Russian before achieving international recognition as an English prose stylist. He also had a passion for entomology and an interest in chess problems. His most famous work, Lolita (1955), is considered one of the most important novels of the 20th century and was ranked #4 on the Modern Library 100 Best Novels. His novel Pale Fire (1962) was ranked #53 on the same list. Nabokov also wrote the memoir Speak, Memory, which was listed #8 on the Modern Library nonfiction list.
