William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 – May 11, 1920) was an American realist novelist, literary critic, and playwright. He was nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters" and is known for his work as an editor of The Atlantic Monthly. His notable works include the novels The Rise of Silas Lapham and A Traveler from Altruria, as well as the Christmas story Christmas Every Day, which was adapted into a 1996 film. Howells was recognized for his contributions to American literature through his writing and critical perspectives.
