Mrs. Lander travels to a New York hotel where she had previously stayed with her husband, and is recognized by staff who remember her from past visits. She and her companion, Clementina, are greeted with familiarity upon arrival, and during breakfast, Clementina is unexpectedly embraced and complimented by Mrs. Milray, who introduces herself and expresses delight at seeing her.
