Panteleimon Kulish (1819-1897) was a Ukrainian writer, folklorist, ethnographer, linguist, translator, critic, editor, publisher, and philosopher of history who actively contributed to the development of Ukrainian literary language, science, philosophy, and history. He authored the first phonetic alphabet for the Ukrainian language, which underlies modern Ukrainian orthography and speech.
