It describes the Columbian Exchange, the ecological convulsion set off when Columbus's voyages ended the separation of two halves of the world that had developed radically different plants and animals, and follows how the Spaniard Legazpi later established trade with China via Manila, connecting goods and people from every corner of the globe for the first time.
