Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men, also known as The Second Discourse, is a 1755 treatise by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It addresses the origins of social inequality and was written in 1754 as Rousseau's entry for a competition held by the Academy of Dijon. The work was published the following year. It explores how inequality arises in society and examines the development of human relationships and structures that lead to unequal conditions among people.
