About “The Social Contract”
The Social Contract is a 1762 book written by the Genevan philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It was originally published in French under the title On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Right. The book explores how to create a political system that has legitimate authority while protecting individual freedom. Rousseau wrote it in response to the challenges of commercial society, a topic he had previously examined in his 1755 work, the Discourse on Inequality.
