The novel A Grain of Wheat by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o is set in a Kenyan village in December 1963 as the community prepares for Uhuru, Kenya's Independence. Flashbacks explore the fight for independence and conditions in detention camps. Another storyline involves a love triangle between Mumbi and her two suitors, Gikonyo and Karanja. A third storyline focuses on Mugo, a man who stands apart from others. His inner conflict is explored through biblical allusions, comparing him to figures like Moses and Judas. The novel is recognized as one of Africa's 100 best books of the twentieth century.
