About “Weep not, child”

Two brothers, Njoroge and Kamau, stand on a garbage heap and look toward their futures. Njoroge is set to attend school, while Kamau will train as a carpenter. They live in Kenya during a time of conflict, as the Mau Mau uprising fights against the white government. The brothers and their family must choose where their loyalties lie. For Kamau, the decision is clear, but for Njoroge, the dream of progress through education is difficult to abandon. Weep Not, Child, first published in 1964 by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, is a novel that explores the impact of the Mau Mau uprising on ordinary people and a single family.
