About “A theory of justice”

A Theory of Justice is a work of political philosophy and ethics by John Rawls. The book presents principles of justice that free and rational people would agree upon in a hypothetical situation of equality, where no one knows their social position, abilities, or fortune. This "veil of ignorance" leads individuals to determine their rights and duties. Rawls addresses objections to his theory and discusses alternatives, particularly utilitarianism. He applies his theory to constitutional liberties, distributive justice, and political obligations, including civil disobedience and conscientious objection. He also connects justice to a doctrine of the good and moral development. First published in 1971, the book has been widely taught and translated into twenty-four languages. A revised edition includes changes that Rawls deemed significant, especially regarding liberty and primary social goods.
