About “Allegory of the Cave”
The allegory of the cave is a philosophical story presented by Plato in his work Republic. It is written as a dialogue between Socrates and his brother Glaucon. The allegory is used to illustrate the effects of education and the lack of it on human nature. It follows two other analogies: the analogy of the Sun and the analogy of the divided line. Through the allegory, Plato explores the nature of reality and knowledge. The story describes prisoners who see only shadows on a wall and do not understand the true nature of the world around them. It is meant to show the process of gaining true understanding and the challenges of moving from ignorance to knowledge. (Summary adapted from Wikipedia, CC BY-SA 4.0.)
