Carmel McBain, the only child of working-class Irish-Catholic parents, is pushed by her mother to transcend her impoverished upbringing in a depressed mill town. Through academic achievement, including a scholarship to a convent school and entrance to London University, Carmel moves away from her origins, but this success leads to a profound sense of displacement and loss of self.
