About “And the hippos were boiled in their tanks”

On August 14, 1944, Lucien Carr stabbed David Kammerer with a Boy Scout knife and dumped his body in the Hudson River. Kammerer had been obsessed with Carr for eight years, and the murder was either an act of self-defense or a breaking point. Carr sought help from his friends William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac, drawing them into the crime. Later, the two writers collaborated on a novel based on the events, using their own experiences and relationships as inspiration. The novel, titled And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks, was rejected for decades before being published. It follows the story of Ramsay Allen and his obsession with Phillip Tourian, depicting a group of young men in New York during World War II. The book reflects the Beat movement's themes of rebellion, art, and violence.
